Chapter 22

Scattered voices leaked through the darkness. I knew I had to claw my way back to consciousness but I didn’t know if I wanted to face what was on the other side.

“Look who’s awake.”

My eyes shot open and I scrambled backwards. The movement sent waves of pain through my chest and was soon accompanied by another jolt up my leg as my escape came to an abrupt halt. Metal clanked against stone. I whipped my head from side to side while laughter echoed into the air around me.

I was sitting on the floor of what looked like a room used for food storage. Based on the noise that came from the other side of the door, we were somewhere inside Collum’s headquarters. Said gang leader was standing with his arms crossed and his back towards the door while a portion of his crew was spread out through the room. On instinct, I scooted backwards.

Metallic clanking vibrated into the air again. I glanced towards the source. Iron shackles had been clamped around my right ankle and had been connected to a chain. The chain had in turn been threaded through the iron ring of the trapdoor on the floor before it snaked along the stones and then ended in the hands of a muscled man by the door. I swallowed. Shit.

“Not so cocky now, are you?” Collum said.

Keeping my eyes on the guy holding the chain, I slowly pushed to my feet. My weapons had been thrown atop a crate by the door. If I could just get to them, I would have a chance.

“You broke our deal,” I said while estimating distances and force required.

“I don’t–”

I dropped down and yanked the chain towards me. A surprised cry rang out as it slipped free from the man’s hands and slid across the floor. Darting forward, I aimed for the loose end.

Air rushed out of my lungs and I stumbled to the side. My movements jerked to a halt a second later when Collum stomped his sturdy boot on the chain while I was still trying to recover from the fist to my ribs.

“You’re a bloody menace, aren’t you?” Collum growled as he bent down and picked up the chain.

Iron grated against iron as he started pulling on it, making it scrape against the ring it was looped through. I dug my heels in but his powerful arms kept hauling the chain towards him until I was forced to follow it.

Once he had pulled it so far that I was standing right next to the ring, he stopped and handed the chain back to the first man. Locking eyes with me, he closed the distance between us. I tried to back away but there was no more slack to allow for that.

“But you’re also a magic user,” he continued. Stopping before me, he drew himself up to his full height and stared down into my face. “Which could come in real handy.”

I stayed silent.

“How does it work?” He jerked his chin towards the faded stones to my right.
